Medicare - Better Access to Mental Health
Medicare is Australia's universal health insurance scheme. The Better Access to Mental Health scheme provides funding to enable individuals living with mental health problems to access a range of mental health services, including psychological services. Under the scheme, eligible individuals are able to access rebates for up to 10 individual sessions with a psychologist per calendar year.

To be eligible for the scheme, individuals must have a valid Medicare card, a referral from a GP or psychiatrist, and have a diagnosis of a mental health condition that is covered by the program.

If you are eligible, your GP will write a Mental Health Care Plan addressed to a psychologist for ongoing treatment. It is a Medicare requirement for the psychologist to communicate with your GP after the 6th and 10th sessions to provide a brief update on your mental health progress and whether or not more sessions are required.
